After seven years teaching 7th & 8th Grade Math at Synapse School, I am taking some time this school year to explore a diverse array teaching opportunities, while also reconnecting with some of my personal passions. I am extremely lucky to be welcome in so many school communities, so I want to give a brief overview of what I’ve been up to.

Synapse School

Synapse School is an independent school in Menlo Park, CA. Founded on the three pillars of Social-Emotional Learning, Innovation and Leading Edge Academics, it’s a wonderful place to be a kid. This year, I am working at Synapse part time as their Associate Director of Middle School Math Innovation! This has two main facets:

  1. Supporting and guiding our team of middle school math teachers
  2. Creating our school’s first ever Math Center (which I will certainly post about again when it’s ready to share)!

Mount Tamalpais College

Mount Tamalpais College is a fully accredited university operating at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, offering folks incarcerated there an opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts degree while incarcerated. I am one of the professors for the Math 115 Intermediate Algebra class, which has me heading to San Quentin once per week to teach my class. This experience has been an absolute highlight, and I plan to post about it here after I wrap up my first semester!

Peninsula Bridge

Peninsula Bridge is a program empowering highly motivated, first-generation, low-income students in the Bay Area to achieve college and career success. I started with Peninsula Bridge as a 6th and 7th grade Math teacher last school year. This year, I am excited to continue that role, while also joining their 8th grade team where I am also developing a new mathematics curriculum and mentoring an 8th grader and his family in the independent high school search process.

Other Stuff

On top of that, I am dedicating much of my time this year to reconnecting with my pets, developing my music skills (which I may be posting about as well), and focusing on my physical health. I also have a few other project ideas in the oven, but I won’t be sharing any of those until we see which ones come out fully baked.
